The first meeting provides the chance for us to get to know one another, and allows for assessment of the issues and symptoms that brings you to therapy. Research shows that the therapeutic relationship is the most important factor in determining the success of treatment so this session gives us the opportunity to test the waters and see if we are a good match.
The First Meeting
Individual Therapy
The focus of individual therapy is usually helping to reduce distress or improve functioning. I primarily utilize cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) while also incorporating Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) when appropriate. Thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are examined and adjusted to bring about positive change. Furthermore, relational patterns that may be contributing to the presenting issues are often explored. I work together with you to personalize a treatment plan that fits your needs and goals for therapy.

Couples Counseling

I consider it a privilege to help couples find renewed hope in a relationship that once offered joy. My approach to couples counseling is based primarily on the Gottman Method, an evidence-based approach that helps couples strengthen communication, deepen friendship, and work through conflict more effectively. While improving communication and reducing conflict are always treatment goals, I recognize that issues vary considerably from couple to couple. During our first meeting, we will discuss the path that is best for you and your significant other.
Family Therapy
Family sessions are typically aimed at improving communication, increasing understanding and empathy, clarifying expectations, and addressing difficult family dynamics. Indeed, I have found that family therapy allows for improvement in individual and family functioning, and produces lasting changes, making everyone involved better off.
